The Mesozoic Iberia-Eurasia diffuse plate boundary: A wide domain of distributed transtensional deformation progressively focusing along the North Pyrenean Zone

Plate kinematic reconstructions available for the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous eastward drift and counterclockwise rotation of Iberian plate imply a major left-lateral motion Iberia with respect to Eurasia. According most authors, this displacement has been accommodated along transform North Pyrenean Zone. However, no relevant field evidence exists proposed >400 km horizontal Fault. Several Permian-Mesozoic basins are distributed around Iberia/Eurasia boundary have more or less inverted during Cenozoic Orogeny (i.e. Chain basins, South Basque-Cantabrian Basin, Parentis Bay Biscay/Asturian margins). All these experienced complex history shared same tectono-stratigraphic evolution, two successive rifting stages: (i) Permian-Triassic following dismantling Variscan belt recording early breakup Pangea (ii) developing after Jurassic post-rift thermal cooling stage. Depending on different techniques investigation interpretation controversial datasets, authors either opening by orthogonal transtensional/pull-apart tectonics basins.
